Across Canada, on September 30, we recognize and remember the First Nations peoples and Indigenous communities who have experienced immense loss and suffering through the effects of the residential school system and colonization by commemorating the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. Inspired by the story of residential school survivor Phyllis (Jack) Webstad from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation.
We can recognize this day by wearing an Orange shirt on September 30, and by attending a community event, or by taking some quiet moments of reflection and reading up on British Columbia’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.
