CUPE 1004 Urges City Council to Restore Lifeguard Services

CUPE 1004 welcomes the motion to restore seasonal lifeguard services, which is scheduled to come before Vancouver City Council’s Standing Committee on City Finance and Services on Wednesday, April 22.

Outdoor lifeguards are a core public safety service. Removing them increases risk at some of the busiest beaches in the region, where thousands of residents, families and visitors rely on trained professionals to prevent accidents and respond to emergencies.

Nearly 3,000 residents and beachgoers have signed a petition calling on Council to restore lifeguard services.

CUPE 1004 President-elect Michael Robinson will address the Council committee on Wednesday as the motion is considered.

Public safety should not be treated as optional. CUPE 1004 is calling on Council to fund and restore lifeguard services in time for the 2026 beach season.
