Election Process Temporarily Suspended

Dear CUPE 1004 members,

We are very disappointed to have to let you know that the election process is being suspended for the time being.

As we prepared to launch a vote next week, and were following our due diligence to ensure that the Local’s bylaws and National Constitution were being followed, we determined that the membership list as it currently exists has deficiencies that need to be corrected before we are able to proceed. Specifically, the ability to identify members in good standing and to appropriately apply the bylaws to those who remain on the list but perhaps are not members under the bylaws.

I will explain a bit about each of these elements.

Notice of Elections

Dear CUPE Local 1004 Members,

This is to advise that CUPE National has approved the recent changes to the Local’s bylaws. With this approval now in place, our local can now proceed with an election process for an Executive to take office when the local moves out of administration.

This notice is being provided to inform members of the positions to be filled, the order in which elections will be conducted, and the procedures for voting. Members are encouraged to review the information carefully to ensure they are informed. The full election details are presented below in the form of questions and answers, so please read through them for all the necessary information.

Active member participation is fundamental to the democratic functioning of our Local, and we encourage all eligible members to take part in the election process.

A Holiday Message

As the year draws to a close, we want to take a moment to thank you and extend our warm wishes to you and your loved ones.

Whether you are celebrating with family and friends, observing personal traditions, or simply taking time to rest and reflect, we hope this holiday season brings you comfort, joy, and renewal. This is also a time to recognize the strength of your union and the solidarity we all share. Each member brings valuable skills, experiences, and perspectives that make our Local stronger.

National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

On December 6, we mark the anniversary of the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre, where 14 women were singled out and murdered because of their gender. One of those women, Maryse Laganière, was a CUPE member who worked at the school.

This act of violent misogyny shook our country and led Parliament to designate December 6 as The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
