Unpaid Work Doesn’t Fly

CUPE Local 1004 members stand with Air Canada Flight Attendants. This strike is not just about working conditions — it is about workers defending their fundamental right to collective bargaining, and the right to be fairly paid for all hours worked.

Air Canada’s refusal to recognize the basic value of flight attendants’ time and labour is shameful. The Liberal government’s interference, taking away workers’ right to strike, it is unjust and outrageous.

Flight attendants are showing courage on the picket lines, and their struggle is a struggle for all workers.

Please support the CUPE Air Canada Flight Attendants by signing up at Unfair Canada. You can also support by joining the picket line at Chester Johnson Park at YVR.

How many CUPE 1004 dues-paying members work for the City of Vancouver?

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the City of Vancouver Family Day event on May 24 at Manitoba Yards!

We had a great time connecting with attendees, sharing information about the work we do, and reading through all of your guesses for our raffle game.

Raffle Question:
How many CUPE 1004 dues-paying members work for the City of Vancouver as of May 15, 2025?

We received a wide range of guesses – from as low as 67 to as high as 700,000! The closest guess came within just 18 of the actual number: 1,551 dues-paying members.

These members perform a wide variety of vital jobs across the City of Vancouver Engineering Department and the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation.

But CUPE 1004 isn’t made up of only City employees!

As of April 30, 2025, we also proudly represent dues-paying members at:

  • PNE and Playland – 824 members
  • Science World – 160 members
  • Small Units – 98 members, including:
    • Easy Park
    • BC Indigenous Housing Society
    • Bowen Island Municipality
    • Co-Development Canada and Café Etico
    • Capilano Students’ Union
    • SUCCESS
    • BCIT Faculty Association
    • Camosun College Faculty Association
    • College of New Caledonia Faculty Association

    • Federation of Post-Secondary Educators of BC
    • Kwantlen Faculty Association
    • Langara Faculty Association
    • Vancouver Island University Faculty Association
    • University of the Fraser Valley Faculty Association

It was a pleasure to connect with so many community members, answer your questions, and share more about the important work our members do every day. We look forward to seeing you at future events!

Red Dress Day – May 5, 2025

Today we honour and remember the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirited people. The Red Dress Project was started by Jaime Black-Morsette, a Red River Métis artist and activist. Each red dress is a powerful symbol – a silent witness to the violence experienced and the lives stolen, too often without justice or closure.

We acknowledge the deep pain and resilience carried by families and stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples.

We must listen, learn, and commit to ending the violence and ensuring that every Indigenous person is safe, valued, and never forgotten.

We raise our voices with love and respect.
