Successful Organizing Workshop
Instructors: Leo McGrady QC and Sonya Sabet-Rasekh
The labour movement currently represents about 30% of waged workers. The effectiveness of unions depends, in part, on rebuilding to a density where unionization is available to the majority of workers. This weekend program will cover the legal framework for organizing new members into a union, the legislative and regulatory changes that would level the field, and successful strategies for organizing.
Joey Hartman, the President of the VDLC, will introduce the workshop. The Instructors are Leo McGrady QC and Sonya Sabet-Rasekh, lawyers with McGrady & Company.
On Saturday, October 29, they will review the basic legal framework for union organising in BC. They will be using a recently completed (October 15, 2016) revised 2nd edition of Leo McGrady’s, Law of Organising in BC, originally published by Butterworths. An electronic and a print copy of the book will be provided to the registered attendees.
On Sunday, October 30, they will be joined by a stellar panel of experienced organizers from seven unions, who will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of organising strategies and techniques they have learned over their years of organising. There will be ample time for questions.
The confirmed panel of speakers are: FPSE (Zoe Towle), IBEW Local 213 (William Maarsman), CUPE National (Tracey Mathieson), MoveUp Local 378 (Caitlin Gilroy), BCGEU (Laarni De Los Reyes), UNIFOR (Murray Gore), IAM Northwest District 250 (Al Cyr); and BCFED (Anita Zaenker).
