Voting Instructions and the Candidates

The nomination period for the positions of President, Vice President, Recording Secretary, and Secretary-Treasurer has now closed. Candidate’s biographies and photographs are linked below.

Q. How will the voting be conducted?
A. All elections will be conducted electronically by secret ballot using the Simply Voting platform which ensures secure access and secrecy of the vote. All members will receive a secure link from Simply Voting. We will be using a preferential voting system where members will be able to rank candidates in order of their preference.

An instant run off system will be used when ballots are initially counted for each voter’s top choice.

Q. Can you explain what ranking candidates means?
A. Ranked choice voting is an election method in which voters rank candidates in order of preference. Voters set their first choice as #1, their second choice as #2, their third choice as #3, etc.

Q. What happens if no candidate receives more than half of the votes?
A. If none of the candidates receive more than half of the votes, the candidate with the least number of votes will be dropped from the list. The next preference from the ballots listing the dropped candidate as the first choice will be counted and added to the remaining candidates totals.

If this results in a candidate receiving more than half of the votes, the candidate is elected. This process continues until a candidate has more than half of the votes.

Q. How long is the voting period?
A. There will be a voting period of 5 days, running from 0:01 of the first day to 23:59 of the last day.

Q. How will a candidate be declared elected?
A. To be elected a candidate must receive more than half of the votes, or in the case of only one candidate for a position, that person will be elected by acclamation.

Q. Once the voting period closes how will I know who was elected?
A. The Elections Returning Officer will announce the voting results via email as soon as reasonably possible.
